The challenge and how we solved it
Storm winds damaged the ridge vent on this Brambleton home, leaving the peak of the roof open to rain. The first priority was stopping water from getting into the house.
The crew put an emergency tarp over the damaged area to keep the home dry, then came back to replace the roof and install a new ridge vent. The plywood decking had buckled, so the crew replaced all of it before the new roof went on.
Before

What we did
- Responded to the emergency call and installed a tarp over the damage.
- Inspected and documented the ridge vent damage.
- Removed the old shingles down to the decking.
- Replaced all of the buckled plywood decking.
- Installed CertainTeed Landmark PRO shingles in Moire Black.
- Installed a new ridge vent and ridge caps.

Keeping your roof in good shape
- After any storm, look along the peak of the roof for lifted ridge caps or vent damage. Catching it early can save a tarp call.
- If you see water coming in, call for an emergency roof repair right away. A tarp buys time until the permanent fix.
- Clean your gutters after the fall leaf drop and again in spring. Clogged gutters push water back under the edge of the roof.
- After strong storms or wind warnings from the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office in Sterling, look over your roof from the ground for missing or lifted shingles.
- Keep tree limbs trimmed back from the roof so branches don’t scrape shingles or drop debris into valleys.
- Check your attic a couple of times a year for water stains, and keep attic vents clear so moisture can escape.
- In winter, watch for ice building up along the eaves. Heavy ice dams are worth a call.
