About Purcellville
Purcellville is a town in western Loudoun County, where open countryside means roofs take the full force of wind and storms rolling in from the Blue Ridge. The 1904 Purcellville Train Station, now on the W&OD Trail and listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places, anchors the historic downtown. The challenge and how we solved it
The challenge: a storm about a month before the replacement left this Purcellville roof with both hail and wind damage. Hail bruises shingles and knocks off the protective granules, which speeds up aging. Wind lifts and breaks the seal between shingles. Together, they leave a roof that can start leaking in the next storm.
The solution: with damage across the roof, a full replacement was the right fix. The new Landmark PRO shingles carry a UL 2218 Class 3 impact rating, which is a smart choice in an area that sees hail. The crew also replaced the window trim and installed new gutters and gutter guards.

Keeping your roof in good shape
- After hail, check your gutters and downspouts for piles of granules, and look for dents on vents and gutters.
- Clean your gutters after the fall leaf drop and again in spring. Clogged gutters push water back under the edge of the roof.
- After strong storms or wind warnings from the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office in Sterling, look over your roof from the ground for missing or lifted shingles.
- Keep tree limbs trimmed back from the roof so branches don’t scrape shingles or drop debris into valleys.
- Check your attic a couple of times a year for water stains, and keep attic vents clear so moisture can escape.
- In winter, watch for ice building up along the eaves. Heavy ice dams are worth a call.
