The challenge and how we solved it

This Sterling townhouse was missing its chimney cap. Without one, rain falls straight into the chimney, and animals and debris can get in too. Over time that water damages the chimney and the roof around it.

The crew replaced the roof with Landmark PRO shingles and fixed the chimney cap problem, so the chimney is covered and the roof around it is sealed. As part of the job, the crew installed two new skylights and replaced the chimney trim, fascia and gutters.

Keeping your roof in good shape

  • Look at the chimney cap from the ground once a year, and after big storms, to make sure it’s still in place.
  • Ask your HOA or neighbors when the adjoining roofs were last replaced, so the joints between townhouse roofs stay sealed.
  • Clean your gutters after the fall leaf drop and again in spring. Clogged gutters push water back under the edge of the roof.
  • After strong storms or wind warnings from the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office in Sterling, look over your roof from the ground for missing or lifted shingles.
  • Keep tree limbs trimmed back from the roof so branches don’t scrape shingles or drop debris into valleys.
  • Check your attic a couple of times a year for water stains, and keep attic vents clear so moisture can escape.
  • In winter, watch for ice building up along the eaves. Heavy ice dams are worth a call.
