About Ashburn

Ashburn is an unincorporated community in eastern Loudoun County, made up mostly of planned neighborhoods built from the 1990s on, so many roofs there are reaching the age where first replacements come due. Ashburn Park, a 16-acre Loudoun County park on Partlow Road, is a neighborhood landmark. Learn more from Loudoun County.

The challenge and how we solved it

The dryer line on this Ashburn home kept clogging. The roof vent serving it was the wrong kind. A standard exhaust vent isn’t designed for the lint in dryer air, so lint builds up and blocks it. A blocked dryer vent traps moisture and lint and is a fire risk.

As part of the replacement, the crew took out the wrong vent and installed a proper dryer vent, then installed the new Landmark roof.

Keeping your roof in good shape

  • Clean the dryer line and check the roof dryer vent once a year. Lint buildup is the most common cause of clogged dryer vents.
  • Clothes taking longer to dry, a hot laundry room or a burning smell can mean a clogged vent. Have it checked.
  • Clean your gutters after the fall leaf drop and again in spring. Clogged gutters push water back under the edge of the roof.
  • After strong storms or wind warnings from the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office in Sterling, look over your roof from the ground for missing or lifted shingles.
  • Keep tree limbs trimmed back from the roof so branches don’t scrape shingles or drop debris into valleys.
  • Check your attic a couple of times a year for water stains, and keep attic vents clear so moisture can escape.
  • In winter, watch for ice building up along the eaves. Heavy ice dams are worth a call.

Frequently asked questions

A dryer vent is built to let lint-filled air out freely. A standard exhaust vent can trap lint, which clogs it and pushes moist air back into the attic.

Lint is flammable, and a blocked vent traps heat and moisture. That’s both a fire risk and a cause of attic mold and rot.

Clothes take longer to dry, the laundry room gets hot, or you smell something burning. If the vent goes through the roof, a roofer can check the cap.

Yes. A replacement is the best time to fix vents, because the roof around them is already open.

Most roofs like these take one to two days, depending on weather and what the crew finds under the old shingles.
