About Leesburg
Leesburg is the county seat of Loudoun County, with a historic downtown and neighborhoods that range from older brick homes near the town center to newer subdivisions on the edges of town. The 1894 Loudoun County Courthouse downtown was the site of the 1933–1934 Commonwealth of Virginia v. Crawford trial, described in a National Park Service landmark summary. The challenge and how we solved it
When the old shingles came off, the crew found rotted plywood. Decking rots when water gets under the shingles over time, from worn shingles, failed flashing or poor attic ventilation. A new roof can’t go on until the bad wood is gone.
The crew cut out and replaced the rotted sections of plywood, then installed a complete Landmark PRO roofing system over solid decking. The crew also replaced the gutters.

Keeping your roof in good shape
- Check your attic a couple of times a year for water stains, and keep attic vents clear so moisture can escape. Wet or poorly ventilated attics are a common cause of rotted decking.
- Look for brown stains on ceilings or a musty attic smell. Both can mean slow leaks that damage plywood long before shingles fail.
- Clean your gutters after the fall leaf drop and again in spring. Clogged gutters push water back under the edge of the roof.
- After strong storms or wind warnings from the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office in Sterling, look over your roof from the ground for missing or lifted shingles.
- Keep tree limbs trimmed back from the roof so branches don’t scrape shingles or drop debris into valleys.
- In winter, watch for ice building up along the eaves. Heavy ice dams are worth a call.
Frequently asked questions
It varies. Some roofs need none, others need several sheets. A good roofer checks every section once the old shingles are off and replaces only what’s damaged.
Slow leaks, failed flashing and poor attic ventilation that traps moisture are the most common causes.
It depends on roof size, weather and how much decking needs replacing. Most roofs like these take one to two days, and extra decking work can add time.
Weatherwood is a CertainTeed Landmark PRO color with warm brown and gray tones.
