About Hamilton, Virginia
Hamilton is a small town in western Loudoun County. The Town of Hamilton is home to the Hamilton Masonic Lodge, an 1873 Italianate building on South Rogers Street that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many homes here are older, and a roof that was put on wrong can go unnoticed for years.
The challenge and how we solved it
Ridge caps cover the peak where two roof slopes meet. On this roof, another company had installed the ridge caps incorrectly, which can leave the ridge line exposed to wind and rain.
The fix was a full roof replacement with the ridge done correctly, so the peaks are sealed and covered the way the shingle system is designed.
Before

What we did
- Inspected the roof and ridge lines to document the incorrectly installed ridge caps.
- Removed the old shingles and checked the roof decking underneath.
- Replaced damaged decking boards where needed.
- Installed underlayment, then new CertainTeed Landmark PRO shingles in Charcoal Black.
- Installed new ridge caps along the ridges and hips.
- Replaced the fascia and soffit.

The finished project

Why these materials
We used CertainTeed Landmark PRO, a dimensional (laminated) asphalt shingle, in Charcoal Black. See our CertainTeed Landmark page for what the line includes, and our roofing brands page for the other manufacturers we install.
Keeping your roof in good shape
- After storms, look along the ridge for missing or lifted ridge caps. They are easy to miss from the ground.
- If you bought an older home in Hamilton, ask for a roof inspection so ridge and flashing problems are found early.
- Clean your gutters after the fall leaf drop and again in spring. Clogged gutters push water back under the edge of the roof.
- After strong storms or wind warnings from the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office in Sterling, look over your roof from the ground for missing or lifted shingles.
- Keep tree limbs trimmed back from the roof so branches don’t scrape shingles or drop debris into valleys.
- Check your attic a couple of times a year for water stains, and keep attic vents clear so moisture can escape.
- In winter, watch for ice building up along the eaves. Heavy ice dams are worth a call.
Frequently asked questions
Wind-driven rain can get under the shingles at the peak. Ridge caps are meant to seal and cover that joint, so a bad install leaves it exposed.
Common signs are missing or lifted ridge caps, exposed nails, uneven shingle rows and leaks near the peak. A roofer can confirm it with an inspection.
Yes. Ridge caps are installed as part of the shingle system, so we use ridge caps made for the same line, here CertainTeed Landmark PRO in Charcoal Black.
Yes. We replace and repair roofs throughout Loudoun County, including Hamilton, Purcellville, Leesburg and Ashburn.
Most roofs like these take one to two days, depending on weather and what the crew finds under the old shingles.
